The Songea Boys Secondary School is among the oldest secondary school established with the purpose of preparing Tanganyikans to rule and serve for the independent Tanganyika Government. Since its inception in 1950, the school provides education to ordinary students, A-Level students and then Inclusive Education was commerced in 2010 where education is provided to all students regardless of their learning difficulties and /or disability. The school is situated about 6km from the town centre alongside Tunduru road, occupying 50 acres.

Since its commencement Songea Boys Secondary School has grown in term of students intake, academic programmes, integrated works into education, infrastructures and social reputation. On matter of fact, the annual students intake in 2022 was 402 from 70 that was in 1960’s. Furthermore, from having only O-Level students in 1960’s recently the school includes O-Level, A-Level (PCM, PCB, PGM, CBG, EGM, HGE, HGK) and it is inclusive from form one to form six. On the other hand the integration of work into education can be exemplified with school projects including; School Farms for Maize, Soya, Sunflower and Sweet Potatoes. Also there is a School Garden for Vegetables and Tree Nursery for fruits, flowering and other variety that feeds the school needs and neighbours. In addition students experiencing animal keeping that includes; Fish, Cows, Chickens, Bee and Pigs as part of an intergrated curriculum.
